Position Purpose

The purpose of this position is to design, develop, and maintain complex algorithms, machine learning models, statistical analyses, and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to extract actionable insights from large and diverse data sets. This role will enable York Regional Police to make informed, data-driven decisions that enhance crime prevention, optimize resource allocation, and strengthen strategic planning. The Data Scientist will also be responsible for integrating AI technologies into Business Intelligence applications, advancing the organization’s analytics capabilities, and transforming data into strategic assets that support both operational and tactical decision-making.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Provide organizational expertise in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance data-informed decision-making across York Regional Police.

Develop and refine analytical and forecasting models to identify emerging trends and support strategic and operational planning.

Analyze large, complex datasets to uncover actionable insights that inform crime prevention, resource optimization, and community safety strategies.

Implement AI and advanced analytics solutions within Business Intelligence (BI) tools and systems to transform data into strategic intelligence.

Conduct geospatial and temporal analyses to identify crime hotspots, patterns, and trends over time.

Ensure data quality and integrity through rigorous cleaning, integration, and processes.

Collaborate with GIS, Data Engineering, and Data Visualization teams to embed models and analytics into operational systems and dashboards.

Translate analytical findings into clear reports and visualizations tailored for senior leaders and front-line decision-makers.

Lead data science projects from conception to deployment, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and timely delivery.

Conduct training and mentorship to improve data literacy and analytical capabilities among internal teams.

Maintain documentation of methodologies, models, datasets, and project outcomes to ensure transparency and reproducibility.

Stay current with emerging tools, technologies, and best practices in data science and AI.

Ensure compliance with data governance, privacy, and security regulations in all analytics activities.

 

 

Education, Licensing & Certifications

 

Successful completion of a four (4) year university degree in data science, computer science, machine learning, or a related discipline.

Successful completion of a Masters degree or PhD in data science, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence or related discipline.

 

Experience

 

Minimum of 5 years of previous experience in data science or statistical and modelling concepts, machine learning algorithms and/or big data platforms.

Skills

High level of expertise in machine learning, machine learning modelling/forecasting and data mining techniques.

Experience with relational and non-relational databases Oracle, SQL and NoSQL.

Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, R NoSQL and experience automating tasks to clean, integrate and prepare data for analysis.

Expertise with data analysis and visualization applications.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with internal members at all ranks, external vendors to explain technical information in easy-to-understand terms.

Flexible and innovative approach to complex issues.

Strong written and technical documentation skills.

Effective organizational and prioritization skills with proven ability to meet deadlines.

Strong critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
